The Master's programme aims to train specialists capable of analysing, explaining and influencing the circulation of scientific knowledge in the public sphere, in a context marked by crises, digital technologies and scientific diplomacy. It is positioned at the intersection of information, technology and diplomacy, with a strong international and research dimension.

Bilingual and international in scope, the Master's programme is research-based and prepares students for careers in scientific mediation, socio-technical expertise and scientific diplomacy, as well as for doctoral studies.

This programme is delivered as a dual degree with Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. It is part of the European alliance EUTOPIA and offers a unique European experience to students from all over the world.

1. Understanding the relationships between science, technology and society

  • Acquire the concepts, theoretical frameworks and interdisciplinary approaches needed to analyse the production, dissemination and uses of scientific knowledge.
  • Study the social, political, economic and cultural impact of emerging technologies (AI, digital platforms, algorithmic systems).

2. Analysing scientific controversies and information issues

  • Examine how information with a high strategic impact (environment, health, technology, conflicts) circulates.
  • Understand the mechanisms of disinformation, polarisation and the construction of public narratives.
  • Develop critical analysis skills in relation to the media and public discourse.

3. Develop unique socio-technical expertise

  • Train analysts capable of understanding and explaining the place of scientific knowledge in the public sphere.
  • Articulate the humanities, social sciences, digital technologies and digital humanities.
  • Produce diagnoses, analyses, reports and summaries for decision-makers, institutions and organisations.

4. Train in scientific communication and mediation

  • Know how to make complex scientific content accessible to different audiences (journalists, citizens, decision-makers, institutions).
  • Mastering tools for popularisation, visualisation, storytelling and communication technologies.
  • Develop professional skills in strategic science communication.

5. Develop skills for science diplomacy

  • Understand the international challenges of scientific and technological cooperation.
  • Understand the geopolitical, social and institutional contexts in which scientists and diplomats operate.
  • Strengthen the ability to communicate science as a diplomatic tool and technology as a geostrategic issue.

6. Provide training in the ethics and governance of digital technologies

  • Study the ethical challenges related to AI, data, surveillance, regulation and civil liberties.
  • Develop a critical understanding of standards, policies and regulatory frameworks relating to technology.

7. Prepare for research and doctoral studies

  • Build a solid methodological foundation in the humanities and social sciences, including digital tools and mixed methods.
  • Encourage integration into research laboratories (LT2D, future Maison des SHS).
  • Offer pre-doctoral training, opening up to theses in information-communication, STS, digital humanities, sociology of innovation, etc.

8. Develop an international and bilingual dimension

  • Offer training in French and English, compatible with student mobility (CY ↔ UBB).
  • Be part of the international strategy of the EUTOPIA alliance, particularly on issues of scientific diplomacy.

Specific features of the M1 Master's in Information, Science, Society

The M1 offers fundamental and cross-disciplinary training to understand the relationships between information, technology and society. It lays the theoretical (SIC, STS, media sociology, digital humanities) and methodological (mixed methods, data analysis, qualitative surveys) foundations necessary to analyse scientific controversies and contemporary socio-technical issues.
The M1 is distinguished by its interdisciplinary orientation, its international outlook, its bilingual approach, and its early integration into research through seminars, case studies and an introduction to scientific work. It prepares students for the specialisation and professionalisation of the M2.

Specific features of the M2 Master's in Information, Science and Society

The M2 deepens the analysis of contemporary socio-technical issues and develops applied expertise in strategic science communication, science diplomacy, technology governance and controversy analysis. It is distinguished by its strong professional and/or research orientation: students complete an internship or an in-depth dissertation, participate in outreach workshops, and work on international case studies. The M2 strengthens advanced skills in digital ethics, technology policy and critical analysis of AI, while opening up direct pathways to specialised careers or doctoral studies.

Bachelor degrees or equivalent standard. There is no specific disciplinary entry requirement for this programme. Applicants with degrees from natural sciences, human sciences, social sciences, or arts and humanities are welcome to apply.

You will be able to take on positions focused on explaining, contextualising and disseminating scientific knowledge to the general public or specialist audiences.
